Demonstration Alert – U. S. Embassy Yaounde Cameroon (January 30, 2020)

Location:  Yaounde

Event:  Protest in Melen neighborhood.  The Embassy has received reports of tear gas being deployed by security forces in response to a large crowd of upwards of 1,000 people near the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Yaounde (CHUY), located in Melen neighborhood, approximately two kilometers west of the American School of Yaoundé (ASOY).  American citizens are advised to avoid this area until further notice.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, as even peaceful demonstrations may quickly turn violent.
  • Monitor local news stations.
  • Remain aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile.
  • Always carry proof of your legal presence in Cameroon, such as a U.S. passport with visa, or a residency card. Since Cameroon does not recognize dual citizenship, U.S. citizens of Cameroonian descent should never attempt to use a Cameroonian passport or identification card.
