American Spaces

With over 650 Spaces in 150 countries worldwide, American Spaces provide welcoming environments where visitors can connect and learn about the United States. In Cameroon, we offer four locations where the public has free access to interactive programs and lectures, as well as books, movies, magazines, and more.  Location details are below for:

  • American Center, located at the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé
  • American Corners, located in Buea and Garoua
  • American Shelf, located in Douala

Hosted in embassies, schools, libraries, and other partner institutions worldwide, American Spaces are platforms for providing information and engagement through activities, such as:

  • Educational advising for those who want to study in the United States;
  • Workshops on a range of topics from career skills to English language learning;
  • Classes and clubs introducing new technologies, 21st century digital skills, and academic resources;
  • Films, discussions, and lectures on entrepreneurship, leadership, current events, international affairs, and much more.

The fundamental function of the American Spaces is to make information about the United States available to the Cameroonian public at large. The book collections include reference titles, works of fiction, as well as business and government publications. Some American Spaces also provide access information about the U.S. through supervised Internet access, audio and video products, CDs, and CD-ROMS. Host institution personnel staff the Corners. Access to an American Space collection is free and open to all interested citizens. Local staff members are fluent in English and French.
