On April 5, 2017, U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Roberto Quiroz II and Mr. Prince Leonard Mabengue Junior, Cameroon’s only FIFA certified Match Agent, visited the Mendong Children Development Program (CDP) in Yaounde where they were welcomed by the center’s coordinator Mrs. Mary Oben, staff members, and youth. They were accompanied by Information Resource Center Librarian Edna Enyeji. See Facebook album here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/yaounde.usembassy/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10158463362080716.

In his remarks, Mr. Quiroz congratulated the center for providing care and education to the youth, and urged the young people to maximize the opportunities presented to them while also persevering towards success by believing in themselves and learning from role models. “The United States of America is proud of each and every one of you.  We especially laud the Cameroonian heroes in our midst, such as Mary Oben who has so nobly founded this center to instill the values of excellence, education, and opportunities for you. People like Mr. Prince Leonard Mabengue Junior, who has come here to deliver a special message for you. These are great people who established a vision for themselves, persevered, worked hard to achieve their goals, and are dedicated to make a positive difference in the lives of others.  We live in an interconnected world, and if you and Cameroon succeeds then the world too succeeds.  The United States stands with you as you seek to dream of your own goals and to establish them. We present books from Nouveaux Horizons to you today as a reminder that people who have achieved great goals in life at different levels – such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Oprah Winfrey, Mary Oben, Prince Mabengue Junior, Edna Enyeji, and many others – have invariably been inspired by books. We hope that these books inspire you too. On est ensemble!”

In his remarks, Mr. Prince Leonard Mabengue Junior exhorted the youth to have faith in something greater than themselves, overcome challenges and never allow themselves to believe that they cannot succeed regardless of their backgrounds or challenges.  He narrated his life story when he began persevering to attain an education, overcoming challenges, becoming a key promoter for human rights, traveling the world to promote his efforts, and as a FIFA Match Agent dedicating himself to seek greater opportunities for Cameroonian youth who have talent in the sport. “You are all very important, believe in yourself and your potential, and do not be afraid of obstacles.  Overcome the obstacles and lean on people who believe in you, as we do, and help uplift the lives of others,” he said.
