6 MINUTE READ
July 3, 2020

Location:  Yaoundé

Event:  The U.S. Embassy warns U.S. citizens to exercise heightened caution in Cameroonian urban centers.  In view of the fact that there have been three Improvised Explosive Devices detonated recently in Yaoundé, the Embassy urges U.S. citizens to avoid any crowded areas, especially after dark.  U.S. Embassy personnel have been instructed to avoid public areas after dark.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid crowded locations and monitor local media for updates;
  • Be aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile; If you notice any suspicious or unattended package or bag, immediately leave the area, encourage others to do so, and locate the nearest authority to report the item.  Do not use your cellphone while near any suspicious item; and
  • Review your personal security plan;
  • Always carry proof of your legal presence in Cameroon, such as a U.S. passport with a valid Cameroonian visa or residency card.  Since Cameroon does not recognize dual citizenship, U.S. citizens of Cameroonian descent should never attempt to use a Cameroonian passport or identification card.
