Location: Northwest and Southwest Regions; Throughout Cameroon
Event: U.S. Embassy Yaoundé informs U.S. citizens that protests and demonstrations are likely to occur in the Northwest and Southwest Regions on or around October 1. This is the one-year anniversary of demonstrations throughout both Regions, which led to fatalities. Furthermore, presidential elections are scheduled for October 7. There is increased potential for political unrest throughout Cameroon during the campaign season, on Election Day and when results are tallied and announced. Rallies, demonstrations, and protests may occur with little notice. As with all large events, there is the opportunity for criminal elements or other violent elements to target participants as well as observers and innocent bystanders.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid political rallies, polling centers, demonstrations, and crowds of any kind; gatherings intended to be peaceful can become confrontational and turn violent;
- Maintain a high level of security awareness leading up to, during, and following October 1 and Election Day;
- Monitor local media for updates; and
- Review your personal security plans.
