The U.S. Embassy organized two-day workshops in Yaounde (June 5 – 6) and Douala (June 8 – 9) focused on the fundamentals of journalism with approximately 60 journalism school students and young journalism professionals from the Center, Littoral, and Southwest regions.
Experienced American journalist and trainer Sarah Wachter led the sessions, which included interactive discussions on ethics, factchecking, press freedom, interview techniques, combating disinformation, and journalist safety. The program was Ms. Wachter’s sixth trip to Cameroon.
The intensive workshops in Douala and Yaounde, which were organized in collaboration with the Africa Regional Services office at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, were the latest in the U.S. Embassy’s sustained engagement with Cameroonian media. In April, the Embassy sponsored a fact-finding trip for 10 journalists on countering disinformation in the United States.
In May, the Embassy hosted a discussion to commemorate World Press Freedom Day with more than 50 journalists based in Douala and in Yaounde. The Embassy is also planning a series of workshops for September. For more information on U.S. Embassy programs, please visit: https://cm.usembassy.gov/educational-exchange-programs/
